‘Breaking’ into the happy ending

Minghella chats with auds at the Variety screening series

WHAT: Variety Screening Series unspooled “Breaking and Entering” Nov. 4 at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles.

WHO: Writer-director Anthony Minghella

UPBEAT CONCLUSION? When asked about how he felt about happy endings, Minghella responded, “I have a real allergy to nihilism.

“I think we’ve made a big mistake in our culture. We think that if it goes wrong, it’s true, and if it goes right, it’s a lie. … The whole movie is about giving everything a second chance. It’s odd to me that’s unfashionable. It should be very fashionable.”
