Should I include a demo?

Hey Pamela,

For the last five-years, I’ve produced hour-long cable docudramas for an East Coast production company. Now, I looking to make the move west. As a producer, when mailing resumes, should I include a demo or just offer to send one upon request? If you recommend sending a reel, should it consist of just highlights or a full-length show? For hiring an editor, I could see how a highlight reel would suffice, but for a producer I feel it’s more important to see a show in its entirety.

Dear Christian:

I would recommend this to you… If you are sending resumes cold & do not know the executive to whom you are sending out your information, and then I would just send a cover letter, or email introduction, & include your resume. Offer to send the reel as a follow up if there is interest in your projects & background.

If indeed you know the executive, & know that there is an official job opening, then I would send the reel along with your resume, & make the cover letter more personal. I would not send a feature length show. Most executives don’t have the time, nor the inclination to watch something for 2 hours. A reel consisting of highlights will certainly allow an executive to assess your talent. Always follow up with an email & phone call.
