We’re in an age of competitive perambulators.
Where the bright canvas plumage of a Bugaboo stroller used to guarantee a baby looky-loos along with cootchie-coos, baby carriages are now invented by rock stars and profiled in design magazines. Moms who want to stand out in the crowd must brace themselves for pricetags that may seem more appropriate for an Eames chair.
“The stroller is the one baby item that is considered part of your personality,” says Amy Chezem, spokeswoman for the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Assn. “It’s like a car.” With that in mind, here’s a look at this year’s models.
|FOUR-WHEEL STROLLING||HIGH CLEARANCE|
|Bugaboo By by Bas Kosters
|Unique feature: Limited-edition pushcart created by Dutch fashion designer Bas Kosters. White leather accents, illustrated fabric in six colors, white rubber tires. “It’s a very cool stroller,” says Bryan Pulice, owner of Traveling Tikes in West Los Angeles.
The ride: Swivel wheels have adjustable suspension; seat tilts in three positions and is lined with a hypoallergenic Aerosleep mattress that stays dry and prevents sweating. Includes mosquito net, parasol, sun canopy and rain cover.
The push: Handlebars move up and down to accommodate your height, and they’re reversible for easy handling on city streets or along trails; wheels can be switched to allow for smooth off-roading.
|Unique feature: Height is set 30% higher than the average stroller, raising your bundle of joy to bonding level and above city dust, exhaust fumes and heat from the pavement.
The ride: Depth of the seat and the footrest can be adjusted to fit the size of your baby. Two-way seating adjusts to five separate positions.
The push: Adjustable handle height and angle; generous space between the wheels allows parents of all sizes to walk comfortably behind the stroller.
