U.K.’s Sky News loses altitude, makes cuts

Net to overhaul evening sked

Sky News, whose veteran editor recently ankled, is culling a number of high-profile presenters and cutting back on staff as it seeks to undo some of the damage incurred in last fall’s lackluster relaunch.

“World News Tonight,” hosted by ex-Bill Clinton aide James Rubin, and “Sky Report” have been canceled.

Overall, 17 staffers will lose their jobs ahead of the outfit’s annual budget round, which begins next month.

Sky, now outgunned by rival “BBC News 24” for the first time ever, is overhauling its evening schedule, but Rubin has a new role presenting a series of programs on international affairs.

Sky News announced last month that editor Nick Pollard would leave this fall. During his 10 years at the web, he has established the rolling news operation as Blighty’s best.

His replacement is executive editor John Ryley.

Pollard said, “One of the aims of the schedule change is to integrate some of the strengths within our general programming, rather than focusing that effort solely on two specific peak-time shows.”
