Toronto fest projectionists go union

IATSE Local 173 wins representation vote

The Intl. Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employes has unionized the projectionists for the Toronto International Film Festival.

IATSE Local 173 announced Monday it had won a representation vote by a 22-6 margin following legal challenges from the festival. The vote certifies the local as bargaining agent for all festival projectionists.

The festival, which began in 1976, currently operates with a $12 million budget, 70 full-time staff, 500 part-time and seasonal staff, and 1,700 volunteers.  The org is scheduled to open its own building in Toronto’s theatre district in 2008.
