Sony has shuffled exec responsibilities after production-related problems, including embarrassing battery recalls and product launch delays.
Component production problems forced Sony to delay the European launch of its Playstation 3 console from November to spring while 5.5 million lithium-ion batteries were recalled, the biggest recall in consumer electronics history, because they were overheating.
Starting Oct. 1, Katsumi Ihara, currently executive deputy prexy managing Sony’s TV and video biz, will be in charge of consumer electronics biz.
Yutaka Nakagawa, executive VP in charge of camcorder ops, is promoted to executive deputy prexy and will take over management of Sony’s core component biz, including semiconductors and batteries, with a mission to strengthen quality control.
Prexy and electronics CEO Ryoji Chubachi, who has been overseeing the personal computer, semiconductors and electronic components biz, will shift to tech development and long-term strategic planning.
