Network to create new comedy competition show

NBC is producing a one-hour pilot from “America’s Funniest Home Videos” exec producer Vin Di Bona that pits standup comedians against each other.

“Comedy Colosseum” will feature comedians as they compete for $10,000 by earning the most laughs from randomly selected audience members. Each contestant must figure out a way to make that portion of the aud — who are unsuspecting of their duties — chuckle.

“Saturday Night Live” alum Dean Edwards is set to host, along with British TV personality Olivia Lee.

“Comedy Colosseum” is based on a Japanese TV format licensed from the Tokyo Broadcasting System. Di Bona is no stranger to Japanese TV imports; “Home Videos” was also inspired by a program from the island nation.

NBC is also familiar with standup comedy competitions, having aired several seasons of “Last Comic Standing.”

Di Bona is set to exec produce with Peter Schankowitz, Al Edgington and Greg Bellon. Ron de Moraes is on board as director.

Di Bona’s other credits include “The I Do Diaries: Wacky Wedding Videos,” “Show Me the Funny,” “America’s Funniest People” and the telepic “Trump Unauthorized.”
