Maisel, Turitzin promoted to new role
Marvel Entertainment has upped two execs, David Maisel and John Turitzin, to the newly created role of exec VP, office of the chief executive.Maisel, formerly exec veep and vice chairman of Marvel Studios, and Turitzin, exec VP and chief counsel, will join current CEO Isaac Perlmutter. Unusual personnel move, in which firm now has three top execs, suggests a greater role for the studio within the larger Marvel Entertainment empire as Marvel Studios prepares to roll out its first pics, insiders said. Maisel oversees the studio division; day-to-day top exec Michael Helfant reports to Maisel. Maisel, Turitzin and Perlmutter will collaborate on decisions, but each will specialize. Maisel will focus more heavily on various interactive businesses, including vidgames and wireless properties, as well as corporate development. Turitzin will have an expanded bailiwick that will now include licensing and publishing efforts. Perlmutter, who retains his title as CEO, will “continue to focus on key corporate initiatives across all of Marvel’s operating divisions,” according to the company. Marvel’s stock has been on the rebound since it sunk over the summer in the wake of topper Avi Arad’s departure, rising more than 30% to top $24. Company is prepping for “Iron Man” and its new Incredible Hulk pic among its first big releases. Studio’s movies are partly financed by a $525 million debt facility from Merrill Lynch that Maisel was instrumental in landing. There was no official word from the company on whether there would be further attempts at financing, though insiders expect Maisel would have a key role in such efforts.
