Chinese pubcaster aims at global auds with Lee skein
BEIJING — Chinese state broadcaster CCTV plans to step up its global profile later this year with a 40-episode skein chronicling the life of Hong Kong chopsocky legend Bruce Lee.
“The Legend of Bruce Lee” will be produced by China Intl. Television Corp., CCTV’s producing and marketing arm, and targeted at global markets, especially the Chinese diaspora.
To boost skein’s appeal abroad, it will be scripted by veteran dramatist Qian Linsen and helmed by Wu Ziniu, a Fifth Generation director (“Evening Bell”).
Lensing starts in December in China, Hong Kong, Canada and the U.S., and skein will run in early 2008 to coincide with the Olympic Games in Beijing, said producer Yu Shengli.
Competition is heating up for the role of the martial arts superstar, who died in 1973, with Taiwan pop idol Jay Chow, dancer-turned-actor Nie Yuan and Chinese kung fu star Shi Tianlong all in the ring.
