Fursts deliver ‘Males’ to CW

Half-hour to be penned by Elwood

Producers Sean and Bryan Furst have sold the single-camera comedy “Beta Males” to the CW.

Half-hour, to be penned by Sheri Elwood (Canada’s “The Jane Show”), revolves around a trio of guys coping with their lives as domestic caretakers while their girlfriends and wives serve as the breadwinners.

Furst brothers, best known for their work on critically acclaimed indie hit “The Cooler,” will exec produce the project, which has been given a script commitment.

Idea was brought in by Elwood and pitched as a laffer about the shift in power dynamics among modern couples. Episodes will view the world through the eyes of three males who, through various circumstances, are in relationships where the women are making more than they do, relegating them to the household chores and child-rearing.

The humor comes from “how men and women look at each other and behave when the traditional roles are reversed,” Sean Furst said. “The lead guys are very manly men who are dealing with some new and awkward situations,” he added.

“One third of married women earn more than their husbands — it’s the old model being upended,” Bryan Furst said. “We fell for it right away.

Lionsgate Television is attached to produce the project. Studio recently signed the Fursts to an overall first-look deal (Daily Variety, Aug. 31).

“Beta Males” is the second TV project pair has set up since inking with LGTV. Brothers are already at work with author Chris Offutt on potential HBO drama “Tough Trade,” about a fictional family-run music dynasty in Nashville.

Fursts produced films “The Matador,” “Owning Mahowny” and “The Girl in the Park,” the upcoming directorial debut of playwright David Auburn.
