‘Conviction’ acquits NBC

Shuffled sked gives NBC a boost Friday

Legal drama “Conviction,” the show NBC pushed most during its coverage of the Winter Olympics, opened to decent but unspectacular numbers Friday night.

Bow of the Dick Wolf skein produced a close second-place finish in the 10 o’clock hour for NBC, which had carried the night’s opening two hours in key young-adult demos. Gameshow “Deal or No Deal” had a very good showing to kick off the night for the Peacock, and relocated drama “Las Vegas” rolled a seven at 9.

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, “Conviction” averaged a 3.4 rating/10 share in adults 18-49 and 10.2 million viewers overall, right behind the demo delivery of timeslot leader “Numbers” on CBS (prelim 3.5/10, 11.8 million).

While this perf repped NBC’s best score in the time period in about 11 months, it was a bit underwhelming given the promotion and strong lead-in from “Las Vegas” (prelim 3.7/11 in 18-49, 10.9 million). “Conviction” also dropped a bit in its second half-hour (3.5 in 18-49 vs. a 3.3 from 10 to 10:30).

“Las Vegas,” which had been airing on Mondays, logged NBC’s highest non-Olympic 18-49 rating in 22 months, topping in the demo CBS’ “Close to Home” (prelim 3.1/9, 11.6 million) and ABC’s “In Justice” (prelim 2.2/6, 6.6 million). “Home” pulled into a virtual tie with “Las Vegas” in 25-54.

Most impressive perfs of the night, though, came at 8 with NBC’s “Deal or No Deal” (prelim 4.0/12 in 18-49, 12.1 million viewers overall), which won in 18-49, and CBS’ “Ghost Whisperer” (prelim 3.6/11, 12.3 million), which had a slight lead in adults 25-54 (prelim 4.7/13) and was the night’s most-watched show overall.

The 18-49 score for “Deal” was the highest in Friday’s 8 o’clock hour for an entertainment program on any net since CBS aired “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” there in December 2002. It was a bounceback for the new gamer, which won its hour Monday before getting blitzed by Fox’s “American Idol” the next three nights.

“Deal” is skedded to air regularly only on Mondays beginning tonight, although the Peacock has skedded an additional Friday airing for this week.

NBC won Friday in 18-49 over second-place CBS (prelim 3.7/11 to 3.4/10), but the Eye had it in adults 25-54 (4.7/12) and total viewers (11.9m).
