Comedy Central turns on radio

Cable network orders sports talkshow pilot

Comedy Central, IMG and Ken Marino are sending up the world of sports radio talkshows.

Cabler has ordered a pilot presentation of “Out of Bounds,” a partially improvised laffer that will take a behind-the-scenes look at the genre, in the vein of workplace comedies “The Office” and “The Larry Sanders Show.”

IMG’s Barry Weintraub created the project and will supervise the production. Marino will pen the pilot, which will begin production early next year, and exec produce with Hillary Mandel.

In “Out of Bounds,” Marino, a “Reno 911!” alum who stars in and co-wrote 2007 Sundance pic “The Ten,” will portray one of the hosts of “Ball Talk,” a Long Island radio show, who has aspirations to get into bigger markets. Joe Lo Truglio will play his co-host.

“They’re not the brightest bulbs. They get into trouble at times for their bits, which are some times fairly extreme, a la Howard Stern,” Marino said.

Show will move between the workplace, populated with characters including the sound editor and producer, and the live radio show itself. IMG will provide real star athletes to come on as the faux radio show’s guests.

“Out of Bounds” is one of several projects Comedy Central is developing in its quest for a sports laffer. Another pilot under consideration is baseball comedy “Three Strikes,” from Jon Stewart’s Busboy Prods.

Marino wrote, starred in and produced the feature “Diggers,” co-starring Paul Rudd, and is a founding member of comedy troupe the State. His TV credits include “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Veronica Mars.”
