'Middle' man signs 2-year deal with Sony

Former “Malcolm in the Middle” showrunner Matthew Carlson has joined ABC’s upcoming single-camera laffer “Big Day” as exec producer.

Simultaneously, Carlson has signed a two-year development deal with Sony Pictures TV, which produces “Big Day.”

Hire was necessary because series creators Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa came out of pilot season with an embarrassment of riches: “Big Day” and their other pilot, Fox’s “‘Til Death,” both scored series orders.

Goldsmith and Yuspa will remain active with both series — which meant tapping showrunners to handle day-to-day oversight. Sony is expected to hire someone for “‘Til Death” in the coming days.

Carlson most recently exec produced the final season of “Malcolm.” His credits also include creating the short-lived animated skein “God, the Devil and Bob,” as well as the series “Men Behaving Badly” and “Townies,” and writing for “The Wonder Years.”

“Big Day” revolves around the events of a couple’s wedding day, played out throughout the entire season. Josh Cooke, Kurt Fuller, Wendie Malick, Stephen Rannazzisi, Miriam Shor, Marla Sokoloff and Stephanie Weir star.
