ABC looks pretty 'Ugly'

ABC is sitting pretty with “Ugly Betty,” ordering a full season of the campy new series.

Meanwhile, Fox confirmed late Friday that it had given three additional script orders to its Thursday night comedies “‘Til Death” and “Happy Hour.”

“Ugly Betty” is the first of ABC’s freshman entries to receive a back-nine order. Together with the successful shift of “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Betty” has given the Alphabet web a reason to cheer on Thursday nights.

After three weeks, “Betty” has attracted an average of 14.8 million viewers — making it the most watched rookie of the still-young new season. “Betty” also has posted a 4.6 rating/13 share with adults 18-49 (placing it third behind NBC’s “Heroes” and ABC’s “Brothers & Sisters”).

Hourlong, which ABC is promoting as a comedy, has posted the Alphabet net’s best 8 p.m. Thursday numbers for a scripted series in 13 years — improving on the web’s timeslot average last year by 95% among viewers and 92% in the key adult 18-49 demo.

“Betty” is second only to “Survivor” in its time period and is tops with women 18-34 (5.7/16) and women 18-49 (6.6/17).

“Ugly Betty” has “given us an impressive foothold leading into the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ hour on Thursday night,” said ABC Entertainment prexy Steve McPherson, who announced the pickup Friday.

“Ugly Betty” stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, a brace-faced plain Jane from Queens, N.Y., who winds up working for a glossy fashion magazine in the heart of Manhattan. Touchstone TV and Reveille skein, based on megahit telenovela “Yo soy Betty la fea,” comes from exec producer Salma Hayek and scribe Silvio Horta.

Ben Silverman, Jose Tamez, James Parriott and James Hayman also exec produce.

“Ugly Betty” also stars Eric Mabius, Alan Dale, Tony Plana, Ana Ortiz, Ashley Jensen, Becki Newton, Mark Indelicato and Vanessa Williams.
