Afterlife takes a look at primetime

NATPE panel discusses change in TV viewing habits

LAS VEGAS – The Afterlife Panel explored how the syndication model for primetime TV series has changed. Today’s viewing options, such as VOD, SVOD, broadband, repurposing, and video iPod TV, give audiences access to many methods for viewing their entertainment.

Panel consensus is that all of these new technologies will create new opportunities for the technologies as well as the content producers.

By 2010, there will be 45.6 million VOD subscribers and 6.4 million satellite subscribers with VOD capability, reaching about half this country’s homes. DVR households in that year should reach 42.5 million.

Diane Robina, the president of Comcast-Sony Networks, says, “Hard to break hits; so many choices consumers have. Marketing will be key. People will be all over the place trying to capture that one watercooler event.”

In the U.S., broadband households are expected to reach 78 million by 2010. Robina says, “The computer will be the aggregate of holding all of our stuff. It’s the place they are going. We have to find a way to get our brands there.”
