U.S. leads IPTV sub forecast

Report predicts a total of 36 mil IPTV homes by 2011

First, the hype, now the reality: Only 3.4% of the world’s TV households are forecast to subscribe to IPTV services by 2011.

Research combo Informa Telecoms & Media predicts the U.S. will be the biggest Internet protocol TV market by 2011, generating revenue of $2.2 billion, ahead of Japan, France, Italy and the U.K.

The report, “IPTV — A Global Analysis,” predicts a total of 36 million IPTV homes by 2011, about seven times the current number.

Informa media research manager Adam Thomas said, “More immediately, we forecast 4.8 million IPTV households by the end of 2006, nearly double the 2005 figure of 2.5 million.

“Much of the growth in 2006, and for the next couple of years, is prompted by services launched by European telcos, especially by incumbents.”
