TBS proud of ‘Boys,’ but ABC’s ‘Big’ isn’t

Scripted comedy sports solid ratings numbers

TBS has reason to be encouraged by the Tuesday tune-in for its initial scripted comedy, “My Boys,” which was cable’s No. 2 program of the night in key demos.

According to Nielsen estimates, the laffer about a female sportswriter averaged 1.78 million viewers at 10 o’clock for its first of two episodes Tuesday, and 1.65 million for its second at 10:30.

The opening seg, which drew a 1.0 national rating/3 share in adults 18-49 and a 1.1/3 in adults 18-34, trailed only FX’s “Nip/Tuck” (1.7/5 in 18-49, 3.02m) among primetime cable programs for the night in 18-49.

It built slightly on its lead-in from a repeat “Sex and the City” (0.9/2 in 18-49) and performed about 50% better than the average delivery for repeats of “Friends” in the 10 o’clock slot the prior four weeks.

Over at ABC, meanwhile, new wedding-themed laffer “Big Day” settled for fourth place at 9 o’clock (2.8/7 in 18-49, 7.55m), despite a sizable lead-in from “A Charlie Brown Christmas” (4.8/13, 13.01m).

And its lead-out, “Help Me Help You,” did even worse (1.8/4 in 18-49, 5.00m) in its first try without a “Dancing With the Stars” lead-in.

Net has been unable to get much traction with its single-camera comedies on the night over the past year, as “Sons & Daughters” also failed in the 9 o’clock hour for the Alphabet last spring.

Strong performers Tuesday included Fox’s “House” (6.9/17, 17.31m), NBC’s “Law & Order: SVU” (5.2/14, 14.64m) and CBS’ “NCIS” (4.1/11, 17.96m), with the latter the night’s most-watched telecast.

Eye didn’t do well at 10, though, as new drama “3 Lbs.” posted its lowest scores in three tries (2.4/7, 7.97m).

And CW’s “Veronica Mars” (1.6/4, 3.44m) matched or set series highs with its fall finale, coming out of an above-average “Gilmore Girls” (2.2/6, 4.89m). New net delivered its best Tuesday to date in 18-34 (2.3/7).
