Summer in the park

Things heat up with 'MacBeth'

Despite the presence of tartaned bagpipers at the Delacourt Theater for the opening night of the Public Theater’s “Macbeth” — the kickoff for the annual Shakespeare in the Park fest — the tropical humidity didn’t provide the most authentic of Scottish experiences.

Lead thesp Liev Schreiber has done Shakespeare in the Park a number of times and wasn’t fazed by the sauna-style temperatures: “I don’t care too much — I love this theater; I could watch someone read a newspaper in it, and I’d still be engrossed.”

Weighty guest list added to the sense of occasion, with surprise appearances from Bill Clinton and daughter Chelsea, Sony’s Howard Stringer, David Geffen, Rupert Murdoch, Tom Hanks, Jessica Lange, Steve Martin, as well as Ethan Hawke, Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Cynthia Nixon, George C. Wolfe, and the Public’s Oskar Eustis and Mara Manus.
