NBC Global Networks has inked a carriage deal for the Sci Fi Channel on Spanish pay TV giant Sogecable’s satcaster Digital Plus.
Launched in the U.S. in 1992, the Sci Fi Channel bowed in the U.K. in 1995 and now also operates in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France.
Sci Fi Spain will air from June 1. Once the channel is established on Digital Plus, it could also roll out on cable and broadband TV in Spain.
Allowing for a broad sense of “sci-fi” to include all fantasy fare, Sci Fi Spain’s initial programming lineup will include the Spanish preems of series “Stargate Atlantis” and “Tremors,” plus “7 Days,” “American Gothic,” “The Sentinel,” “Battlestar Galactica,” “Earth 2,” “The Incredible Hulk” and “The Invisible Man.”
The channel makes a timely bow in Spain. The country has a traditionally large fascination for fantasy/horror genre fare, and a growing appetite for new U.S. shows.
Action/suspense channel Calle 13, also operated by NBC U, was Spain’s most popular niche TV channel on Digital Plus and cable in 2005, claiming a 4.9% niche market share.
Aud favorites included new series of “Nip/Tuck,” “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Monk” and “Enterprise.”
