Schawinski ankles Sat 1

Alberti to helm Teuton web

BERLIN — After three years at the helm of Sat 1, Roger Schawinski is ankling the web next month.

Matthias Alberti, current deputy managing director and head of the web’s entertainment division, will replace Schawinski.

Schawinski, who said he already stayed a year longer than he had intended, declined to extend his contract in order to pursue new professional plans. He leaves the broadcaster in good condition after three years of record earnings.

Under Schawinski, Sat 1 enjoyed major successes with shows such as improv comedy skein “Schillerstrasse,” Teutonic “Ugly Betty” version “That’s Life” and hit minis such as “The Airlift.”

A Swiss commercial TV pioneer, Schawinski replaced Martin Hoffmann at Sat 1 in 2003 following the acquisition of parent group ProSiebenSat 1 by a Haim Saban-led consortium.

With the sale of ProSiebenSat 1 in full swing, Schawinski looks set to exit along with Saban, who is currently fielding offers for the TV conglom from private equity consortia Permira/KKR, Apax/Goldman Sachs/Cinven and Turkish media giant Dogan. Fund manager CVC has reportedly bowed out of the bidding.

Binding bids for ProSiebenSat 1, which controls five free-to-air channels, are expected by Dec. 12, with a sale expected to be announced by year’s end.
