BERLIN — RTL Television will launch three new digital channels on satellite and cable on Dec. 1.
The channels — RTL Crime, lifestyle-oriented RTL Living and telenovela- and soap-soaked Passion — will be available nationwide on the tividiSAT satellite platform, operated by regional cabler Unity Media, and on Unity cable subsids in North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse as well as on Kabel BW in Baden-Wurttemberg.
RTL also is planning to distribute the channels on the IPTV platforms of local telcos Deutsche Telekom and HanseNet.
While the outlets will be available nationwide, they won’t be carried on Germany’s biggest cabler, Kabel Deutschland, which covers 13 of the country’s 16 states.
RTL Crime will air crime fare such as the “CSI” series and local Autobahn actioner “Alarm for Cobra 11.” RTL Living will showcase family, home improvement and travel programming such as “Trips Money Can’t Buy,” with Ewan McGregor, and BBC Worldwide’s travel programs, hosted by Michael Palin. Femme-friendly Passion, a joint venture with RTL production affiliate UFA Film & TV Produktion, will carry soaps, telenovelas and romantic series from Germany, the U.S. and South America.
RTL’s digital offering follows the June launch of rival ProSiebenSat 1’s digital webs Kabel Eins Classics and Sat 1 Comedy, which are carried by Kabel Deutschland as well as Unity and Kabel BW.
