'Weeds' mom weds 'Bride'
Mary-Louise Parker is going from Showtime’s weed-selling soccer mom to sexy seductress in Oxygen original movie “The Robber Bride.”
Thesp has signed to topline the two-hour, which soon begins production in Toronto for a premiere in early 2007.
“Robber Bride” is an adaptation of the eponymous Margaret Atwood novel about three friends, each of whom has been betrayed by the manipulative Zenia (Parker). When she is mysteriously murdered, the friends reunite to discover her secrets.
Working Title and Shaftsbury Films will produce. “Robber Bride” is the second collaboration between Oxygen and Working Title; the two previously partnered in 2003 on the made-for “A Tale of Two Wives,” starring Cheryl Hines and Peter Gallagher.
Simon Wright, Christina Jennings and Scott Garvie exec produce. David Evans (“Mysterious Creatures”) will direct from a script by Tassie Cameron.
Oxygen president of programming and marketing Debby Beece said “Robber Bride” is a bit of a departure for the women’s cabler, which has largely focused on romantic comedy pics.
“We’ve been experimenting with other genres,” Beece said, pointing to recent action-thriller “Banshee,” starring Taryn Manning.
Telepic also is in keeping with the channel’s lineup of original series — “The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency,” “Breaking Up With Shannen Doherty” and “Campus Ladies” — all of which center on strong-willed women with big personalities.
“Robber Bride” cast includes Shawn Doyle, Wendy Crewson, Susan Lynch, Amanda Root and Greg Bryk.
