PIFF’s Kiwi contingent celebrated the 20th anniversary of sister city ties between Auckland and Pusan at the Grand Hotel on Monday. On hand were Auckland mayor Dick Hubbard and New Zealand ambassador Jane Coombs, who helped toast ties with fine New Zealand wine.
Coombs noted that Korea and New Zealand are both “small countries in Asia with strong export industries” that are punching above their international weight. The Korean biz, she added, has been coming to New Zealand for its locations, post-production facilities and even contributing coin to co-productions. Koreans are also going Kiwi in growing numbers, as not only visitors, but immigrants: “We have more Koreans in New Zealand as a larger percentage of population than any other countries in the world,” she said. “They love it there — and we love having them.”
