Low ratings for holiday week
No smash hit has emerged from this summer’s crop of series, but competition skeins “America’s Got Talent” on NBC and “So You Think You Can Dance” on Fox are faring best, topping the rankings during the lightest-watched week of the year.
With the Independence Day holiday falling on a Tuesday, audience viewing levels were suppressed on the first two nights of the week before picking up midframe. Overall, though, the four major broadcast nets established a low, with a combined average of 20.8 million viewers in primetime — off from the previous low of 21.5 million set last July.
Wednesday’s “America’s Got Talent” was the week’s top draw among young adults, holding off the same night’s “So You Think You Can Dance.” Week also saw OK perfs for returning CBS unscripted skeins “Big Brother” and “Rock Star.”
According to Nielsen, Fox remained on top in adults 18-49 for the July 3-9 sesh, with a 2.0 rating/7 share, with CBS and NBC tied for second (1.8/6) and ABC fourth (1.6/5). Spanish-language net Univision wasn’t far behind in fifth (1.3/4).
CBS and NBC tied for the adults 25-54 lead (2.2/7), Fox ruled as usual among the 12-34 crowd (2.0/7) and CBS made it 6-for-6 this summer in total viewers (6.5 million).
NBC’s “Got Talent” stood as the top primetime telecast in adults 18-49 (4.1/12), adults 25-54 (4.6/12) and total viewers (12.03 million) for a second straight week. Show expands its presence this week, beginning tonight with a two-hour performance episode and Thursday with a 30-minute results show.
Also of note for the Peacock was Sunday’s repeat of “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” (2.6/7 in 18-49, 8.86m), which led its time period thanks in part to its lead-in from “Dateline”; last half-hour of the newsmag, featuring a report on Internet adoption, did a 2.9/9 in 18-49 and a 3.4/9 in 25-54 to lead its slot.
And the net’s “Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks” (2.1/8 in 18-49, 8.01m) was Tuesday’s top holiday spec.
For Fox, “So You Think You Can Dance” continues to shine both with its performance show on Wednesday (3.9/12 in 18-49, 9.78m) and its Thursday results edition (3.4/10, 8.85m) — the week’s No. 2 and 3 programs in 18-49.
Net’s repeat of Sunday’s “Family Guy” (2.9/8 in 18-49, 5.87m) was the week’s top comedy in demos.
ABC barely registered in the ratings until Thursday, when the time-period premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy” showed some spunk (2.3/7 in 18-49, 7.23m), building on its lead-in from the firstrun “Master of Champions” (1.5/5, 5.19m).
Alphabet’s second airing of ABC Family drama “Kyle XY” held up well Friday (1.5/5 in 18-49, 4.88m), finishing in a virtual tie for the 18-49 lead with UPN’s “WWE Smackdown.” (“Kyle” actually took a big dip on the cabler last Monday, although much of that was likely the result of airing on the holiday’s eve.)
CBS opened “Big Brother: All Stars” to solid but unspectacular numbers on Thursday (2.8/10, 7.54m), one day after “Rock Star: Supernova” (2.2/7, 5.30m) launched its soph season with a third-place showing. “Big Brother” was down 18% from last year’s preem.
USA led the ad-supported cable nets once again, with a 1.03 rating in adults 18-49, airing four of the frame’s top five primetime telecasts in the demo.
Leading the way was Friday’s series preem of “Psych” (1.9/6 in 18-49, 6.06m), which built on its lead-in from the season opener of “Monk” (1.4/5, 5.09m). “Psych” was Friday’s top show on cable and led all networks from 10 to 11 p.m. among viewers under 50 and men 18-49.
MTV’s “The Hills” was cable’s top telecast of the week in adults 18-34 (2.3/7) and stood as the No. 5 primetime show on all of television in women 18-34 (3.6/11).
Comedy Central moved up to No. 5 for the week in both 18-49 and 18-34, boosted by the return of “Chappelle’s Show” (1.4/4 in 18-49, 2.57m) and “Mind of Mencia” (1.3/4, 2.37m). In its Sunday 9 o’clock slot, “Chappelle’s” placed second in 18-34 (2.0/6), behind only Fox’s “Family Guy” (3.6/11).
