NBC opens door to ‘Salesman’ pilot

Stern's show will mix scripted material with unscripted interaction

NBC is close to picking up a cast-contingent pilot from Endemol USA that breaks down the barriers between scripted and reality fare.

Hybrid family sitcom, tentatively titled “Traveling Salesman,” contains an unscripted element in which the show’s fictional main character interacts with real-life people via hidden camera.

Jared Stern (“Toy Story 3”) is writing and exec producing the single-camera project loosely based on his own father. Comedy, set in the Midwest, revolves around a door-to-door salesman and his family.

Around 75% of the show will be scripted, but 25% will consist of the salesman hitting the road and attempting to sell products to unsuspecting marks.

“Traveling Salesman” reps the first project to come out of Endemol USA’s new scripted division, led by former Fox exec Jeremy Gold. Endemol USA topper David Goldberg would also exec produce.

Gold, who departed Fox in summer, had served as senior VP of comedy development at the net since 2003; before that, he worked as VP of comedy at sister studio 20th Century Fox TV.

Peacock won the rights to the project after competitive bidding between the net and ABC. Endemol USA currently produces the hit gamers “Deal or No Deal” and “1 vs. 100” for NBC.

Endemol USA’s other shows include ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and “Show Me the Money” and CBS’ “Big Brother.”
