NATPE eyes new media

Next year's Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Awards honorees also announced

NATPE ’07 organizers Tuesday unveiled a confab agenda focused on a TV biz that’s contending with emerging new-media technologies and platforms.

Theme is “Evolve and Prosper,” which prexy-CEO of the National Assn. of Television Program Executives Rick Feldman said is a signal that content delivery is becoming an ever more complex issue.

“Everyone understands the ice is melting. Everyone knows the world will look a lot different in a few years,” he said. “The playbook has gotten much more complicated … and that’s reflected by what we’re doing at the conference.”

Feldman also announced next year’s Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Awards honorees: producers Stephen J. Cannell, Harry Friedman, Anthony E. Zuiker and USA/Sci Fi Channel president Bonnie Hammer. Kudos will be handed out Jan. 15 at an evening gala.

Confab is slated to run Jan. 15-18 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Attendance for the past four NATPE confabs has grown, and Feldman noted 2007 numbers are ahead of last year at this time. As usual, 75%-80% of exhibitors will be on the floor while the rest will conduct business in the suites. Granada and Cable Ready are among companies that will move from the suites to the floor this year.

An extra hour of selling time on the floor will be added Jan. 17 and 18.

Recently retired Dick Robertson will be the focus of a roast on the evening of Jan. 17.

Similar to last year, conference will kick off Jan. 15 with the third edition of NATPE Mobile ++ presented by sponsor InfoSpace. Achilles Media will produce the daylong event focused on new media and technologies.

On the same day, NATPE will open up the educational foundation’s television seminar for university professors to the confab’s international participants.

Chris Anderson, editor-in-chief of Wired magazine and author of “The Long Tail,” will deliver the keynote address Jan. 16.

Sessions of note include:

  • A discussion between Variety editor-in-chief Peter Bart, Mandalay Entertainment chair-CEO Peter Guber, MGM Worldwide TV Group’s Harry Sloan and Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer;

  • A panel titled “Inside Mike Darnell’s Brain,” moderated by Fox exec VP Preston Beckman;

  • A think tank on the state of primetime reality TV with panelists Cris Abrego, Lloyd Braun, Michael Camacho, Mort Marcus and Andrea Wong;

  • A discussion between Daily Variety TV critic Brian Lowry, Hollywood Reporter editor Andrew Wallenstein and “Lost” exec producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindeloff.
