Met ‘Class’ is in session

McNally classic gets gala treatment

WHAT: The Metropolitan Opera Guild’s Monday gala performance of “Master Class” at the Broadhurst Theater.

WHO: Play’s writer, and four-time Tony-winner, Terrence McNally — after watching the Metropolitan Opera Guild’s benefit celebrating the 50th anniversary of show’s subject Maria Callas’ debut at the Met.

SPLITTING THE ROLE: “I didn’t know what to expect,” McNally said at the after-show gala — high above Broadway at the Marriott. “I’m very glad I came in for it.”

Jessica Lange, Edie Falco, Leslie Uggams, Kathy Bates, Dixie Carter and Maria Tucci took turns in the role of “La Divina,” with the stunt casting enhancing the power of the 1996 Tony Award-winning play.
