Macho ‘Nacho’

Black laffer preems at Chinese Theater

At Monday’s Chinese Theater preem for “Nacho Libre,” Paramount marketing topper Gerry Rich called Jack Black‘s character “our own caped crusader.”

And while a movie with Batman and Robin as Mexican tag-team wrestlers conceivably could be pitched some day, “Nacho Libre” holds the mark for surrealism in the genre, at least for the moment. “It’s such an absurd idea — monk by day, masked wrestler by night,” said producer Julia Pistor. “But it’s so full of heart.”

At the Highlands after-party, Par prexy Gail Berman said the absurdity fits into a tradition. “Paramount has a great history of doing physical comedies, going back to Martin & Lewis,” said Berman. “And I love physical comedy.”
