‘Lessons’ driven to succeed

WHAT: Variety‘s Screening Series unspooled Sony Classics’ Brit import “Driving Lessons” Sept. 26 at Hollywood’s ArcLight.

WHO: Thesp Julie Walters, director-writer Jeremy Brock, producer Julia Chasman. Variety‘s Elizabeth Guider moderated the panel.

PLAYING BOTH PARTS: With typical British self-deprecating humor, Brock discussed his transition from screenwriter to behind the camera.

“I now have to trust the characterization will speak for me,” he said. “As a bona fide control freak that’s difficult. I’m trying to lose that dysfunctional tendency. I was very tough on the writer. I’m usually the guy who has to be taken aside. I took myself outside quite a lot.”

INDIE SPIRIT: Along with thesp Laura Linney, Chasman was the only Yank involved in the pic. “This is not the type of movie an American studio would make. And they didn’t,” she said. “But then one bought it.”
