'Lopez' scribe to star in NBC sitcom
“Jake in Progress” exec producer Bob Kushell is teaming up with standup Michael Loftus for a half-hour comedy set up at Fox.
NBC U Television Studio is producing the laffer, which has been given a script commitment by Fox. Loftus — now a writer on ABC’s “George Lopez” — is being eyed to star.
Kushell and Loftus will write and exec produce, with Levity Entertainment Group’s Judi Brown-Marmel and Robert Hartmann also on board as exec producers.
Untitled laffer is a domestic sitcom about a married couple dealing with everything from religion and politics to therapy and addictions in an unconventional way. Fox is expected to make a decision on whether the project will move forward within the next six weeks.
In addition to “Jake,” Kushell’s credits include “The Simpsons,” “3rd Rock From the Sun” and “Grounded for Life.”
Loftus first caught NBC U’s eye last summer with his performance at the Just for Laughs comedy festival in Montreal. Scribe-standup founded the Ohio comedy troupe Midwest Comedy Tool & Die.
