BERLIN — Germany’s Premiere, the sole nationwide paybox, may soon face a rival: Herbert Kloiber.
The Teutonic TV veteran wants to bow a pay movie channel to fortify regional cable operator Unity Media’s offerings.
Unity Media, parent of tyro sports web Arena, which outbid Premiere for lucrative Bundesliga soccer rights, has a slew of channels in its Tividi package. But it lacks a movie web with new Hollywood output — something Kloiber can provide via his business ties to Warner Bros. and Disney.
Unity operates in the states of Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia but plans to distribute nationwide via satellite this year.
