Growth spurt for ‘Weeds’

Cabler orders third season

Showtime is taking another hit of “Weeds.”

As expected (Daily Variety, Nov. 3), cabler has ordered up a third season of the half-hour comedy, greenlighting 15 episodes for next summer.

Episode order reps an increase from this season’s 12. Production on the new episodes begins in the spring.

“This acclaimed show will be the centerpiece of our comedy strategy for several years to come,” said Showtime entertainment topper Robert Greenblatt.

Series creator Jenji Kohan is exec producer. Lionsgate TV produces in association with Tilted Prods.

Show toplines Emmy winner Mary-Louise Parker as a suburban mom who turns to dealing marijuana after her husband dies unexpectedly. Elizabeth Perkins, Tonye Patano, Romany Malco, Justin Kirk and Kevin Nealon co-star.
