‘Grendel’ roars loud

Goldenthal's work sets the stage

HOLLYWOOD — Elliot Goldenthal‘s opera “Grendel” finally opened Thursday after a two-week delay caused by a malfunctioning set.

After a standing ovation greeted Goldenthal, director Julie Taymor and star Eric Owens, a cast supper was held on the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion’s second floor, where L.A. Opera general director Placido Domingo greeted guests before jetting off to Tokyo at midnight.

On hand for the world premiere were Emmy Rossum, John Williams, Marilyn and Alan Bergman, Alicia Silverstone, Norman Lear, Marilu Henner and Beau Bridges.
