Cartoon net popping for ‘Pee-Wee’

Net picks up Emmy-winning series

After experimenting with a two-week run of “Saved by the Bell,” Cartoon Network’s nighttime counterpart Adult Swim is adding another Saturday morning fave from the ’80s to the lineup.

Channel has picked up all 45 original episodes of “Pee-wee’s Playhouse,” which will begin airing on July 10, Monday-Thursday at 11.

“Pee-wee,” starring Paul Reubens as the bowtie-wearing Pee-wee Herman, won 22 Emmy Awards during its run. Series premiered on CBS in 1986.

Cartoon Network senior VP Mike Lazzo said “Pee-wee” is back because “we’re all huge fans” — the same reason he gave for deciding to rerun live-action series “Saved by the Bell” on the animation-driven channel.

Despite providing a nice ratings boost in total viewership, “Saved by the Bell” won’t be returning to Adult Swim, a network rep confirmed.
