Looking to kickstart its comedy biz, ABC Family is taking a trip to “The Other Mall.”
Cabler has ordered production on a pilot for the former Fox project. Single-camera mockumentary revolves around the staffers of an aging mall as they try to invigorate the center, now in competition with the newly opened shopping mecca across town.
“Other Mall” comes from writer-exec producers Danny Salles (“My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiance”) and thesps David Hornsby (“Six Feet Under”) and Lance Krall (“The Lance Krall Show”). All three are vets of the Spike TV hit reality show satire “The Joe Schmo Show.”
No studio is attached to produce. Regency Television originally developed the show for Fox Broadcasting (Daily Variety, Dec. 10, 2004) but has not committed to continue with the ABC Family production.
“Other Mall” follows a young go-getter (played by Hornsby in the original pilot) who’s put in charge of the mall after it’s sold to a big corporation.
Like “The Office,” skein will be shot by an unseen film crew who document the goings-on in the mall. That includes following the many wacky retailers left, like knick-knack kiosk Joanie Loves Tchotchkes.
Hornsby and Krall appeared in the original pilot — which they shot on spec for $1,000 — but are not yet signed to star in the new edition. Susan Dickes (“Just Shoot Me”) will serve as a consultant on the project.
“Other Mall” is the only comedy pilot currently in contention for a series pickup at ABC Family. Cabler has passed on previous efforts “Mud Show,” a circus-set laffer from Sandy Chanley; Gale Anne Hurd and Steve Tao’s career women comedy “Breadwinners”; and the teen dramedy “Just a Phase” from Carter Covington.
