1966: ‘Smart’ tribute

Aug.9, 1966

GOOD MORNING: Any similarity is — intentional: the “Get Smart” set looks something out of “Casablanca”; Don Adams’ imitation of Humphrey Bogart is perfect; the “fat actor’s'” lines will be spoken by a Sydney Greenstreet imitator; and the little man with thick glasses will sound like Peter Lorre … Was clearance necessary from WB — or was it obtained? “No,” admits “Smart” exec producer Leonard Stern. “We feel we’re on hallowed ground shooting here at Par-Sunset, the former Warner Bros. studio. It’s like silent acquiescence” … The Bogart takeoff was chosen for a fall seg not only because the late thesp is very “in” these days, but because it happens to be Adams’ best — and only — imitation … But all this Bogie business may fade into the background of this seg when audiences see Barbara Feldon in blonde wig, looking frighteningly like Marilyn Monroe and singing in such a sultry voice RCA signed her to an exclusive pact. (2006 update: Steve Carell will star in the “Get Smart” WB feature, which will start filming March 26. First, he’ll use time off from “The Office” to start the “Dan in Real Life” feature for Disney. He’ll also need time to p.a. “Evan Almighty”).
