Phillippe flies the ‘Flags’

Pic's Gotham preem an upscale affair

“I’ve never written a letter to a director,” Ryan Phillippe said Monday at the “Flags of Our Fathers” Gotham preem, explaining how he approached helmer Clint Eastwood to land a role in the war epic. “But I knew I had to be part of this film, and went through a whole audition process.”

Pic’s Gotham preem was an exclusive, upscale affair at the Tribeca Grand — put on by the Cinema Society and Zenith Watches — rather than the usual Midtown red-carpet scrum.

Phillippe, working the terrace of the nearby Soho Grand penthouse at the pic’s after-party, added he’d been particularly interested in the project because both of his grandfathers fought in World War II.
