Although National Board of Review kudofest host Paul Reiser assured the audience that Tuesday’s show would be over by 10:30 p.m., guests didn’t leave the annual gala until well after 11.
That’s a late night, considering most of the winners had winged East that day from the Broadcast Film Critics Assn.’s fete the evening before in Santa Monica.
Award recipients including Ang Lee, Jane Fonda and Howard Shore as well as presenters Martin Scorsese and Bob Shaye and guests Alan Horn, Ellen Barkin and Halle Berry mixed and mingled during the lengthy ceremony at Tavern on the Green in Central Park.
Original screenplay winner Noah Baumbach, meanwhile, was a bit shyer.
“My problem is I have a problem absorbing this kind of honor,” Baumbach said. “I can’t help but have a sneaking suspicion that there is a real National Board of Review going on somewhere else across town, or maybe even closer to my apartment, and this is a bunch of celebrity look-alikes humoring me.”
Felicity Huffman, who nabbed actress kudos, was also a bit bewildered.
“I keep expecting Ashton Kutcher to jump out and say, ‘You’ve been punk’d,’ ” she quipped.
