“The Banquet,” a lush reinterpretation of William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” got its Cannes launch at a Monday-night party and a Tuesday consumer press junket. Party was not the largest ever at the Majestic Beach, but in terms of stars per square meter, it was one of the most densely populated of the week. Pic’s star, Ziyi Zhang, was clearly at home with her fellow Cannes jurors as she brought along Tim Roth and Samuel L. Jackson. Their hair-down, high spirits were contrasted by a de rigueur festival security clique. Also in attendance were Oliver Stone, Willem Dafoe and pic’s co-star Daniel Wu, accompanying pic’s director Feng Xiaogang and producers Wang Zhonglei and Wang Zhongjun of China’s Huayi Brothers, and Peter Lam of Hong Kong shingle Media Asia.
