Competition pic runs into censorship problems

CANNES — Despite being accompanied by a ravishing cast including Hu Lingying and Hao Lei, Chinese helmer Lou Ye squeezed out only one smile during the Thursday press conference for competition film “Summer Palace.”

Questions and answers focused heavily on the censorship problems Lou admitted he had largely ignored during production. “This is a team effort, so it needs to be shown in the best possible conditions,” he said of the decision to preem the film in Cannes without the approval of China’s Film Board.

He said that the film’s sexual and political content were equally problematic for the censors, but volunteered: “I’ll cut anything they want to have it shown in China.” On that basis, pic will end up as a short.
