Universal Music taps MTV’s Brand

Vet takes biz development role

LONDON – Universal Music Group Intl. (UMGI) has lured MTV Networks Intl. veteran Harriet Brand to join its ranks in the newly created position of senior VP, business development.

Brand, who will be based in London, joins UMGI after 13 years at the music television broadcaster, where she was most recently senior VP of music. The move to the world’s biggest record company sees Brand’s career come full circle, having previously worked for EMI in both the U.S. and Europe.

She will report to UMGI chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge, who said in a statement: “There is no one who better understands the power of artists and music in today’s multi-platform, entertainment-driven marketplace than Harriett. Her experience, coupled with an instinctive ability to think and act strategically, make her the perfect person to help us to refine and energize our future business.”

In her new role, Brand will pay particular attention to fostering fresh links and alignments with current and prospective partners around the world.

“The whole working model for record companies is changing, which obviously makes this a very dynamic and interesting time,” she commented. “I know Lucian is determined to reinvent his business, and so to be part of that is magnetic to me. Some people question the future of the labels and have said to me that it’s a good time to get out of the industry, but I believe the whole moment of re-imagining the business is a challenge for us.”
