Indie is one of Germany's most successful labels

Sony BMG Germany is strengthening its local market share by acquiring the 50% it didn’t already own in Teutonic indie label Four Music.

Home to German artists such as Die Fantastischen Vier, Afrob, Clueso, Gentleman and Laura Lopez Castro, Four Music has grown into one of the country’s most successful labels in the past decade.

Sony BMG bought a 50% stake last year, taking over administration and distribution while leaving the company creatively autonomous.

Sony BMG Germany chief exec Edgar Berger has said the label will retain its independent character following the takeover. Four Music topper Fitz Braum is expected to remain at the helm.

Berger added that the takeover ensures further growth of Sony BMG’s German repertoire.

Local talent makes up a significant segment of the country’s music biz. At Sony BMG Germany, Teutonic artists accounted for 60% of total sales in the first half of the year.
