Shields takes cover at exec veep post
Sony BMG’s top flack, Cory Shields, has ankled the diskery to become exec VP of communications at NBC Universal.
Shields spent seven years at NBC U before leaving for J. Walter Thompson and then joining former NBC topper Andy Lack at Sony BMG.
Back at NBC U, Shields becomes the top communications exec, with oversight of communications strategy, media relations, internal communications and philanthropy.
He will work closely with Rebecca Marks, who oversees all communication for NBC Universal’s television properties, and will report to NBC U TV topper Jeff Zucker.
Shields jumped to Sony BMG in 2005 just as a power struggle was about to erupt between Bertelsmann and Sony over management of the label; that ended in Lack ceding day-to-day control of the label to Bertelsmann’s Rolf Schmidt-Holz.
Shields replaces Anna Perez, who announced her plans to leave NBC U this spring to move to the San Francisco Bay Area.
Shields first joined NBC in 1997 as director of NBC News media relations and was promoted to VP communications for MSNBC.
He moved to NBC’s corporate communications department in 2000 and played a role in the communications strategy during the acquisition of Universal and its integration with NBC.
