LONDON — Ulrich Jaerkel has been promoted to the newly created position of senior VP strategic marketing & business development for continental Europe at Sony BMG Music International.
Effective immediately, Jaerkel will report to Maarten Steinkamp, prexy Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Continental Europe, and will be based in London and Munich.
Jaerkel has been set the task of building a new business development unit and, together with his team, he will analyze the market to identify new business concepts as well as developing and launching new products. Furthermore, he will help to implement the company’s strategic business plans by means of acquisition or divestiture of products and companies and establish strategic partnerships.
“In order for Sony BMG to become a total music entertainment company, which diversifies across its product range and delivery platforms, it is critical that we create such a new unit to drive and respond to the demands of today’s market,” explained Steinkamp in a statement. “We owe it to our artists to bring their music and creativity to as many consumers and in as many ways as we can. With his diverse background and recent experience in the digital world, I know that Ulrich is the right person to deliver a wide range of existing ideas and concepts we already have and bring them to commercial fruition.”
Jaerkel most recently served as senior VP, strategic marketing at Sony BMG Germany. In this function, he oversaw various divisions, comprising compilations, digital sales, direct marketing, audio/visual strategy, kids and family entertainment and comedy. He started his career at a TV production company in Frankfurt. He then worked as executive assistant to the president of BMG Germany/Switzerland/Austria, before being appointed managing director of BMG Ariola Media in 2001.
