Programs will feature local musicians

MTV Networks Intl. is continuing its expansion with the launch of a dedicated, localized 24-hour MTV channel and Web site in Turkey.

MTV Turkey will launch in nearly 6 million households in September under a joint venture licensing agreement between MTVNI and Multi-Channel Developers.

MTVNI has had a presence in the market for more than a decade through its MTV Europe feed. That presence includes an eight-hour Turkish-language Nickelodeon channel and VH1’s Europe feed through its partnership with MCD.

MTV Turkey will broadcast more local music and air Istanbul-produced programming, such as the weekly “Hit List Turkey.” The show’s VJ will be selected through a nationwide contest.

MTV Turkey also plans to produce versions of some of the cabler’s hit formats, such as “Pimp My Ride” and “Cribs.”

Esra Oflaz Guvenkaya, co-founder of MCD, said: “The launch of a dedicated MTV channel marks the beginning of a new era for music television in Turkey.

“Our musicians will not only have more exposure among young Turks, but they also will be able to share their rich music with other parts of the world through MTV’s international award shows and live performances.”
