Chinese auds groove to rock, hip-hop

Beijing Pop Fest will include Supergrass, Placebo

BEIJING — After decades in the musical wilderness, Beijing and Shanghai are slowly establishing themselves as venues for rock and hip-hop stars on Asian tours, and music fans are gearing up for a busy autumn gig schedule.

British rockers Placebo and Supergrass, U.S. heavy metal star Sebastian Bach and Japanese DJ Ken Ishii will play at the second Beijing Pop Festival in Chaoyang Park this weekend. Lineup also features local warbler Muma accompanying the Third Party, and local heroes XTX, Reflector and AK47.

Meanwhile, hard on the heels of fellow hip-hop stars Black Eyed Peas, rapper Jay-Z plays his first China date Oct. 23 at Hongkou Football Stadium in Shanghai, part of his Asian tour that also will take him to Taipei and Seoul.
