Sony Music cues Caplan

Exec tapped senior veep of A&R

The former president of Or Music, the indie label that signed rockers Los Lonely Boys and the rapper Matisyahu, has been tapped senior veep of A&R at Sony Music Label Group U.S.

Michael Caplan will head the A&R department and serve as president of NuHaven Music, a new imprint headquartered at RED Distribution’s New York offices. Label will be distributed through both RED Distribution and Sony BMG Sales Enterprise.

Or had a distrib deal with Sony BMG’s Epic Records that Caplan had orchestrated. Prior to launching Or Music, Caplan was senior veep of A&R for Epic Records from 1998-2002.

Caplan has “a fantastic history of building careers from the ground up while always maintaining the integrity of the artist and the music,” said Don Ienner, CEO of Sony Music Label Group U.S. Caplan will report to Ienner.

Caplan first joined Epic Records in 1983 in promotion; in 1989, he became veep, A&R. In 1993, he revived the OKeh label for blues-oriented acts. He was also senior VP, A&R, for 550 Music.
