Flatts’ ‘Gang’ of three

Country band tops the charts with new CD

There’s a chance you haven’t heard of Rascal Flatts — but not if you’re paying much attention.

Right about now, the three-piece country band on Disney’s Lyric Street Records is the biggest seller in music. Not just in country music, but in music.

The band’s newest CD, “Me and My Gang,” scanned more than 1.4 million units in its first three weeks on the market, making it first on Nielsen SoundScan’s Top 200 albums chart. It is the second-highest seller of the year so far, behind another Disney release, “High School Musical.”

The album ranks ahead of CDs by Mary J. Blige, Carrie Underwood, Eminem and Jamie Foxx.

According to Lyric Street prexy Randy Goodman, the band’s sales have been growing exponentially.

He attributes the success to strong songs and a loyal fan base — mostly of women.

About 90 percent of the band’s fan base is women between 18 and 44 years old, Goodman says. Concert ticket sales go to women 15-to-1.

Goodman says the band’s genre base remains country radio and always will be, but “they have a great sense about songs they write and also about songs that people will find poignant.”
