Weinsteins retell classic Asian tales

The Weinsteins are in final talks to ink a three-picture deal with Chinese thesp Zhang Ziyi, including a live-action version of “Mulan” and a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 pic “The Seven Samurai.” The story of Hua Mulan is a Chinese folk tale, meaning the story is in the public domain. Disney made “Mulan” into an animated pic in 1998, but the tale was first put on the bigscreen in a 1956 Chinese production. Story revolves around a young woman who disguises herself as a man to take her father’s place in battle. TWC hopes to begin shooting early next year.
