The big chill

“Ice Age: the Meltdown” declined 49% in its second frame to $34.5 million. That’s typical for a high grossing event pic – “Meltdown” bowed to $68 million last weekend – but it’s the biggest second weekend drop ever for a CGI toon, save for those that premiered over Thanksgiving. Amongst openers, “Benchwarmers” was the one success story, grossing a solid $20.5 million. New Line’s “Take the Lead” fell well behind, grossing $12.8 million at 3,009 locations for a per theater average of $4,246. First release by the new MGM, “Lucky Number Slevin” from the Weinstein Co., did a so-do $7.1 million at 1,984 theaters. Per play average was $3,594. And as expected, “Phat Girlz” didn’t do much for Fox Searchlight, grossing just $3.1 million at only 1,056 playdates. Average take was $2,936.
